			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Of all the online marketing topics that I have studied, the one I have put the most effort into mastering is search engine optimization (SEO). In layman&#8217;s terms, search engine optimization describes the manipulation of web pages including both onsite and offsite factors in order to achieve a high ranking in the major search engines, especially Google.</p>
<p>I often hear people say &#8220;yeah, I have keywords in my meta tags, is that what you are talking about.&#8221; What most people don&#8217;t realize is that Google and Yahoo stopped reading meta tags because of people taking advantage of search engine optimization tricks some time around 2006. According to many search engine experts, your website is more likely to get penalized for improper use of the keyword meta tag than actually benefit from the keywords found within this tag.</p>
<p>At this point your are probably asking yourself, if meta tags aren&#8217;t important any more, then what affects search engine ranking. The answer is a complex mix of onsite and offsite factors that work in harmony to create high search engine rankings.</p>
<p><b>Examples of Onsite Factors</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Domain Name &#8211; Likely the biggest factor, if your website name is your primary keyword, and you provide good content you will rank well</li>
<li>Page URLs &#8211; Pages should be named with keywords and never include dynamic variables</li>
<li>Page Titles &#8211; Should be short and descriptive</li>
<li>Page Headers &#8211; Pages should have H1 and H2 or H3 tags with keywords that match the content</li>
<li>Written Content &#8211; Google likes around 200 &#8211; 300 words with a keyword density of 3 &#8211; 7 %</li>
<li>Internal Links &#8211; Links within your website should be descriptive and create a natural hierarchy of content</li>
<li>Other &#8211; Alt tags, bold tags, meta descriptions, and uniqueness of content all affect rankings</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Offsite and Other Factors</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Age of Website &#8211; Older sites do better</li>
<li>Incoming Links &#8211; Not all links are equal but links help, and good links really help</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Under-utilized Search Engine Optimization Tools</b><br />
There are a few tools that are fairly new to the SEO world that I consistently find people failing to recognize. The first is feed syndication. There are literally hundreds of websites that accept RSS feeds for syndication. They are developed to drive traffic, both human and bot (search engine indexing spiders) to websites. The second is online video distribution. Online video marketing can be effective for a variety of reasons including branding, customer engagement, and direct sales, but it is also an extremely effective search engine optimization tool if the videos are optimized correctly.</p>

Typically they have had mediocre results from online advertising campaigns including banner advertising and pay-per-click advertising such as Google AdWords. Let me begin by saying that online advertising is not all bad. When valuated correctly, properly targeted, and meticulously tracked it can yield a very high return on investment.<br />

<h2>Evaluating Online Advertising</h2>
<p>The most important aspect of online advertising is properly evaluating the value of online ad real estate before purchasing any advertising. This basically comes down to three factors: website traffic, ad visibility (page placement, size, media type), and target audience. You wouldn&#8217;t buy a small, obscured billboard on a low traffic street, so why would you want to buy a poorly place banner advertisement on a low traffic website. </p>
<h2>Pay-Per-Click Advertising</h2>
<p>The easiest type of online advertising to evaluate and track is pay-per-click. The big player in this market is Google AdWords. With a well organized Google AdWords account you can fine tune exactly what you are willing to pay for each click on each separate search keyword or phrase. You can also geo-target your advertising so it only appears to visitors in certain geographic areas.</p>
<h2>Case Study</h2>
<p>The graphic at the top of this page shows the results of an online banner advertising campaign for A Taste of Health. The spike in traffic near the end of the graph represents new traffic from an online banner ad on VegWeb.com. During the first week of advertising on VegWeb.com the ad produced and average of 75 visitors per day. With a total monthly advertising cost around $500.00, that makes the average visitor around $0.22. Visitors from VegWeb.com (one of the top vegan recipe and community forum websites in the world) are perfect candidates for A Taste of Health&#8217;s vegan cruise and at an average of only $0.22 per visitor it outperforms all other advertising initiatives I have run for A Taste of Health.</p>

In the spring of 2009 I initiated a well-planned social media campaign for A Taste of Health, which after 7 months is approaching a positive RIO and appears to be on pace for continued success and expansion in 2010.</p>

Allow me this opportunity to say that social media is one of the most cost effective marketing tools ever. I believe that the disconnect comes from the fact that many people have trouble drawing the line between personal social media use and effective business use. </p>
<p>Social media evangelists often say that it is &#8220;all about the conversation,&#8221; which is undoubtedly true, but it&#8217;s important to note that this does not necessarily mean just any conversation. The important thing to learn with social media is that there are easy, effective, and repeatable steps you can take to grow your social networks to include more people interested in your products and services, and that there are efficient ways to seek out the conversations about your industry, where you can communicate with potential customers and business partners.</p>
<p>The key is to get into a cycle of focused growth and targeted communication that drivers visitors to your products and services, while also enhancing your personal relationship with existing and potential clients. This cannot happen if you simply push sales pitches onto your social media outlets. People will tune you out and likely lose respect for your brand. On the other hand, if you provide useful content on your social networks and interesting and positive interaction on the related conversations you will build consumer confidence in your brand and products, which leads directly to sales and positive word of mouth. </p>

<p><b>Search Engine Rankings (SEO)</b><br />
This project began in the summer of 2005 with intensive keyword research and results tracking on over 200 keywords targeted by primary site content and over 1500 keywords targeted in Google AdWords advertising. Both website redesigns (2005 and 2007) were very successful in their goals of improving search engine ranking and organic search traffic.</p>
<p><b>Search Engine Optimization Metrics</b><br />
Currently the website gets nearly 2000 free visitors each month from Google&#8217;s organic search results. Top performing keywords include: slitter blades, industrial blade, circular blades. During the month of January, 2010, Carolina Knife&#8217;s website received 1917 free visitors from Google on a total of 1078 different keyword searches.</p>
